Starting Point

The first publishings of fairy tales occured in Baroque France; sometimes collections of stories written with care, sometimes new stories invented in the traditional style. The first author of this genre was Charles Perrault (Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Good, Puss in Boots, Cinderella...), followed by Madame d'Aulnoy with Tales of fairies and Madame de Beaumont with The Beauty and the Beast. A couple of centuries later, Maurice Ravel chose some magical moments of these stories to base his worke Ma mère l'oye upon. At the height of his career, Ravel wrote this simple and polished musical jewel for children, now seen as one of his best works.
