Opera < Back to list

The Teatro Real closes the 2016/ 2017 season with Macbeth, the magnificent opera by Giuseppe Verdi which pays tribute to William Shakespeare and one of the most sinister antiheros in literature. Macbeth is the first of the three operas which Verdi composed with the inspiration of  Shakespeare who was his favourite writer. It illustrates the savage consequences of ambition for power in a concise way. This concert version will be conducted by James Conlon with the return of Plácido Domingo to the Teatro Real in the lead role.

Starting Point

With Macbeth, Verdi based an opera on a Shakespearean play for the first time, he was a much admired author: “he is one of my very special poets”. The meticulousness during the process of its composition and the level of perfection he demanded of the singers for the premiere are proof of how much the composer felt involved with his creation. The powerful, pithy verses required of librettist Francesco Maria Piave were the perfect genesis for this score of astonishing theatrical authority.  Verdi appeared to have discovered a potential for expression previously unknown to him, and which would only intensify for the rest of his career. Macbeth is an opera of perverse prophecies that come true.  It describes ambition for power and its disastrous consequences in a harsh manner. Macbeth's desire to attain and keep the crown leads him to dishonor his hands with blood and become blind in his judgement. Accompanying him on this mission is his wife, Lady Macbeth, the prime mover of the conspiracy. She pushes him to commit the crime that unleashes the rest of the tragedy.  The Witches chorus or the ghost of Banquo, the friend Macbeth murders in his ravings, are terrifying elements of an atrocious story of one of the most sinister antiheros in literature.
