Starting Point

Commissioned to celebrate the coronation of Leopold II of Austria as the King of Bohemia, La clemenza de Tito is a perfect example of Metastasian opera seria. The Roman emperor Tito must deal with a violent rebellion which he manages to repress with magnanimity. It was composed with the French Revolution in full force, a period when half of Europe questioned the capacity and morality of its reigning monarchs. To put a compassionate and virtuous leader on stage was an opportunity not to be missed. Leopold II came to the throne with a monarchy in crisis in the same way Tito was obliged to assume leadership of the convalescent Flavian dynasty. The story of Tito was an attempt to influence public opinion regarding Leopold.  Mozart accepted the commission after  an overworked Salieri had turned it down. Mozart wrote what would be one of his final and most sublime compositions in 1791, only a few months before dying. Ursel and Karl-Ernst Herrmann's production was one of Gerard Mortier’s early achievements, it first opened in Brussels in 1982. Salzburg and Paris followed as did Madrid in 2012. The revival of this production is in honour of Mortier, Artistic Director of the Teatro Real from 2010 to 2013.
